Fresh Start’s volunteers are highly valued and contribute greatly to the success of Fresh Start. Compassionate and caring Calgary citizens, Fresh Start Alumni and current residents make up the bulk of Fresh Start’s volunteers. Fresh Start’s Board of Directors consists entirely of volunteers that fill various positions of responsibility and functions. Alumni and resident volunteers express their gratitude through their actions when they volunteer at Fresh Start. Their thoughtful actions serve as inspiration to others in recovery; they often say they keep what they have by giving it away. After much input from other community resources, our work through the Donner Award and Charity Intelligence process and other business leaders, Fresh Start began to re-evaluate the way it measures volunteer hours and those we serve, realizing that we have been under counting the impact of our services perhaps for years. It is important that we recognize the true volunteer value and those served on a go forward basis. This being the case, Fresh Start utilized 192 volunteers devoting approximately 10,285 hours of their time in the 2007. Fresh Start began holding monthly fund raising clean and sober dances in February 2007. These dances are open to the entire recovery community and are completely operated through volunteers. The dances were responsible for increasing Fresh Start’s annual operational revenue by approximately $10,000.00

Outstanding Volunteers - 2007

The staff, residents and Board would like to gratefully acknowledge all of its volunteers and would like to showcase three very special volunteers for 2007:

Frank Frey      Martina Jileckova      Mark Hansford

These three individuals have worked tirelessly throughout 2007 in the areas of house operations, fund raising and community relations regarding the development of the new Fresh Start facility which we are hoping to commence construction on in the fall of 2008. Frank, Martina and Mark’s commitment and passion for the work being done at Fresh Start and in the community is indeed inspiring! In my mind they are true examples of humility, service and selfless action. On behalf of all concerned with Fresh Start, we thank them from the bottom of our hearts for their contributions. Their work will leave a legacy for many to come.

Outstanding Volunteer Fund Raiser of the Year - 2006

The staff, residents and Board would like to express their gratitude to the Fresh Start Outstanding Volunteer Fund Raiser of the year Mr. Darcy Drysdale. Darcy was semi retired at the age of forty after building a very successful alarm company over a twenty five year period. Darcy’s pride and joy is his son Steven with whom he enjoys a very strong relationship. Darcy was very proactive in his approach to Fresh Start. He could see the work we were doing in the community and desired to contribute to the recovery process through his fund raising efforts. If you have ever met Darcy you will know he isn’t easily deterred from accomplishing the goals he sets. Again, we thank Darcy very much for his support and applaud the contribution he is making towards recovering lives.
